Valve spring compressor

Picked uo a 1960's Longbro valve spring compressor for the fantastic price of £2.00

It says it for Hilman minx,Sunbeam rapier,Singer gazelle,standard eight,ten and Pennant.Triumph Herald OH valve.

So will it fit my 1098 if I ever need it? Help will be much appreciated

great ,thats what i hoped,even tho it looks old fashioned compared to the ones i used to use in the 70's ,with lever springs etc,which i lent out and never got back,he left his mrs and scarpered left the kids took his tools

The best one I have used is basically a G clamp, but with 2 prongs on the cast "pad"

Try it and see, if it doesn't really suit put it on Ebay as RARE!

Show us a pic of what you have - but almost certainly it will be fine.

Provided that the clamping screws on the arms are done up tight it should be OK. I have one similar but with a nasty prong for a foot and it is rubbish. That compressor looks as though it may also be slim enough to fit in the tappet chest of a side valve engine. I have a lever operated compressor for OHV engines
Look after the box and it will be worth double at auction

It should be fine - maybe lost a 'foot' on the end of the screw - just put a 2p on the valve head before compressing. You do know to wind it up 'firmly' then tap the split claw with a hammer to release the cotters.........

Its getting the cotters in thats the problem...

Easiest way to get the valves out is to put the head on the deck with a bit of wood under the valves put a largish socket on the caps and give it a tap with a heavy hammer... pushes head down, cotters fall out, all comes apart.

Much quicker and easier than using a compressor to disassemble ;) But obviously you need one to put it all back together again

If you have an old hand-operated pillar drill that will work just as well.
