While you are replace cheap bits get rid of that petrol pipe which I suspect is as hard as rock and as brittle as glass.
It should be made of rubber, normally with a braided covering.

There is NO need to separate HT leads - if they are in good condition. And if not - get NEW ones! Put tape back on for now till the new pipe arrives......

It costs nothing to separate the HT leads and can solve a problem if they are a bit marginal.

I'm good with tape, don't worry. and it'll only be on there for a week maximum. The leads are separated now anyway, so nothing to worry about either way.

Nothing wrong with electrical tape, there is no electric wires attached to the carburetor,

Exactly - it's a very temporary fix to hold it all together until the new tube arrives........

I think the female fitting on the vacuum pipe shown, confused me a little as it is not necessary for that carb fitting. ( is it the wrong type?)
I suppose the previous owner got a few things wrong leading to oinon having various problems.

Yeah, it seems to be a screw on type vac pipe, converted into a push on, with the use of random bits of tube.
Edit forgot to say, she back fired 3 time yesterday, then broke down when I was taking her on a charging run. no idea if thats related, but thought it might make a difference.

It was a combination of things really. New condensor, new vac pipe and the decoke helped. But I think the main problem was the coil being dead, which was why it broke down on the charging run. Since I replaced that she runs like like a charm, managed a 150mile motorway run at 65mph the whole way

NOOOOO! It's NEVER the coil!! What do you think was wrong with it??? It CAN be coil connections though......

sorry BMC, It was the coil this time. Mate had a look at it after she broke down and wouldn't start even from bump or handle. He told me sparks were really weak (which I didn't know as Trudy's my first car with plugs), checked all connections and were still weak. Changed the coil out and she ran fine with lovely fat sparks.
