mot exemption pre 1960 cars
There was a recent topic on this that said you had to have an mot valid on the 18th November in order to be exempted otherwise the car would have to go through an extensive test. I have two 1950s morris minors for which the mot ran out in July. I was hoping to restart using them after November 18th. I rant the Department of Transport today for clarification and they said they had no knowledge of this extensive test and as far as they were concerned I could start using them again after November 18th. Has anyone else heard otherwise?

DVLA are well known for information which differs from one dept to the other

Interesting! So anyone with a nice old 'mantelpiece ornament' logbook will be able to transfer the number - since the main hurdle has been the need to have an MOT on the car - which means the car must exist for that to happen....... So - where's that old logbook for my 1959 Mini got to .......... **** SM - must be worth a few pounds these days ??

Re: mot exemption pre 1960 cars
An MOT for pre 1960 cars (following on from pre 60's light goods vehicles) is now optional from November, so essentially, any 'barn find' could be put straight on the road. However, as the MOT is only really valid on the day of inspection, everyone has a duty to maintain their vehicle in roadworthy condition (enforeceable by law) - a feature of car useage that many fail to realise.

Not strictly correct: the directgov website lists the requirements:bmcecosse wrote:Interesting! So anyone with a nice old 'mantelpiece ornament' logbook will be able to transfer the number - since the main hurdle has been the need to have an MOT on the car
registered at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
available for inspection
of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate
currently taxed
plus a couple of exceptions for written off cars and cars recently out of tax.
Unless they change the third requirement, cherished number transfers from pre-1960 vehicles will end. Notice that it doesn't say "must have an MoT", because this would be a bit unfair on someone whose car was written off a few days before the MoT was due, but while it was legitimately on the road.
So Roy's mantelpiece ornament will fail on 1 (perhaps), 2 (certainly), 3(unless they change the rules), and 4, if he hasn't got a V5C, as they may want to inspect it before issuing one. Cancel that round of drinks.

Hahahaha - I believer there is a 6 month window which will cover the case where the car is written off just beore an MOT runs out. Indeed -I will need to get a V5c for that car - surely they won't want to actually SEE the car ?? I can show them a picture...

Re: mot exemption pre 1960 cars
I wondered about this, as far as I understand the law, at any time, a car has to be "raodworthy" to MOT standard. So the only real change as far as i can tell, is that you aren't required to pay someone to check the car every year, they are trusting that enthusiasts that have these cars will keep them in good nick, but can still pull you up for having a car that is not safe to you, or other road users. Personally, I will probably carry on getting an MOT type test from a registered mechanic, just to ensure I'm not missing anything. I don't have facilities to do brake balance testing and that sort of stuff, so I'll need to pay a man to do so, I'm sure the better equipped here will just enjoy the 40 quid odd a year saving on the MOT for an extra spanner set or whatever it is you crazy people spend your money on.plastic_orange wrote:An MOT for pre 1960 cars (following on from pre 60's light goods vehicles) is now optional from November, so essentially, any 'barn find' could be put straight on the road. Not many people have brake testers, but most people can tell if there is a problem with the brakes
(except on my mums fiesta... 3 of the wheels passed the MOT brake efficiency and one recorded no effort, but hands off the wheel it stopped in a straight line

Hi
I to rang the DVLA asking about the need for an Mot on my Series 1 landy and was told the same ie after 18th November any pre 1960 car does not require a test and the guy i spoke to said there were now plans to introduce any other form of test ( I had previously rung two Mot stations who had no idea what i was talking about!!!!)

Once the MOT exemption for pre-1960 vehicles comes into force you will no longer be able to transfer the registration numbers off the cars so, sadly Roy, you won't be able to transfer that Mini registration
There will be no official replacement for the MOT. The government have decided that these vehicles no longer require an annual inspection certificate so, potentially just carry on. There will still be the option to take the car for a voluntary MOT which will, essentially, be exactly the same as the old MOT test and will probably be charged at the same cost.

Not quite true..Just spoken to reg transfers who have just sold one of my registration no ,and the information they have re this is that the dvla, inform them that . Vehicles pre 1960 are still vehicles of a class that require an mot,but that they are now regarded as exempt .But , say that the vehicle will require(even though it dosent need one for road use) a current Mot before they will transfer to another car or onto a retention certificate. By doing so they can make sure that the registration refers to ,a roadworthy vehicle and not just an old tractor chassis ,or old registration document. So pre 60 regs can be transfered but the car needs a voluntary mot. This ,they say removes the need for them to carry out hundreds of vehicle inspection like they used to do years ago to check that the reg actually is on a vehicle. Sorry Roy you've still had it
