Series 2 chrome windscreen strip

Post by Rustymogg »

The 1954 split-screen minor that I'm sympathetically restoring (bought in time-warp original condition) doesn't have a chrome windscreen trim fitted - and I can see no evidence that it's ever had one..
Am I deluding myself that I don't have to try to find these strips to finish my restoration (!), or does anyone know whether some of these cars were manufactured without this trim?

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Cheers,
Tim Wright

There are numerous split screen Minors driving around wth no screen surround because they are not available new, there is the occasional used set. Maybe one day I will pursuade the club to commission a batch.

they all had them look closely at the rubber and you should see a slit that runs all the way round at the outer edge, this is often filled up with sealant when the strip is missing and makes it look like non should be fitted. They are only cosmetic and unless after originality, not required. You will look a long time for a good set, rocking house droppings are easier to find.

There's a re-chromed surround currently on ebay - looks like it will fetch a high price! : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290787842864? ... 1423.l2649

I bid on these when they were last listed, but for some reason there was a problem with billing hence the relisting.
I'm needing a set :D

The strip certainly finishes off the car but it is a pain to fit! Took me ages to get it right.

It is indeed a pain, but worth it, if only for the astoundingly good looks relative to plain black rubber. What worked for me was to use two strong people and lots of lubrication (WD-40 is okay, or Vaseline or something), working the horizontal straight portions of the two surround halves in from either side. Eventually the horizontal straight portions fit and you can work on the vertical straight portions, and then you can do the corners (the hardest part, I found). Takes about 1 1/2 hours.

As you can see, though, I have an early 1000 and not a Series II...but I believe the surround is the same.[frame]Image[/frame]

They are for a 1 piece window. Split screen rubber and chrome trims are totally different.

The problem with fitting the split screen surround is that the trim usuallly gets slightly kinked or bent and springs out of the slot in the rubber, usually on the corners.
The best solution is to use a suitable adhesive behind the trim and tape the trim in place whilst the adhesive sets
