Piston crown damage

Another question: the crown (edge) of No.1 piston (which suffered big end failure) seems to have come into contact with the head judging by the shapes left imprinted on it; it is also pitted in this area, although the dished part is untouched.

Should I obtain a replacement piston or will this be OK to use again?

It's likely to be cracked and may have squeezed the top ring gap. I wouldn't use it if there is any alternative.

Hmm... indeed the top ring came away in pieces when I took it out.

I will use the same cylinder number piston from the other engine then, providing it is STD.

Must the number in the diamond correspond to the number on the block?

It's really not going to be important now ! Just use the best piston (and rod) from the other engine.

According to an earlier posting there are two different con rods in an A Series engine, therefore you will need to get a matching rod. I do not know how to identify which is which.

They are simply right and left hand versions of the same rod. The 803 rods are different from 948 rods - smaller 'big' end ! If you see what I mean....

Don't some have a pinch bolt on the little end.

Yes - the 803 and the 948, and very early 1098. That's what JJ is trying to undo!
