Just read the post that mentioned falling off 4 axle stands. Can't quite understand that one. Please elaborate.

Olly, you don't mention your location, but maybe your local branch has "Mechanics days". Here in Cumbria those give branch members access to 2-post and 4-post lifts - much safer than axle stands!
