Quick Clutch Question 1275

Morning all

I've fitted an ital A+ engine into my project car with a standard 1098 gearbox. I've also fitted a brand new 1098 clutch kit.

Problem i have is the clutch doesn't work properly. If the engine is running and I try to put it in gear it crunches badly. I've tried a different clutch fork as I originally though this might be the problem but it's no different. I've tried it at various levels of adjustment but it's no different.

If i start the car in gear with the clutch depressed then the clutch action works just fine but it just doesn't want to play when running.

Any ideas folks?

Is it possible that the spigot bushing is binding? Is the friction plate in the right way round? Don't mean to insult you, but that mistake has been made more than once!

No insult taken! I'm sure it would be an easy mistake to make. Have checked it though and it's definitely the right way round

I don't think it's the spigot bush either. The very first time I fitted the clutch it worked just fine. It was only when I tried it for a second time it didn't work. I think something is sticking somewhere and i'm guessing at the clutch itself being faulty

what flywheel have you used?

I think it's cured now. I went down to look at it today and part of the clutch cover seemed to have broken off, causing the pressure plate to 'ratchet' in place when depressed.

Clutch cover broken off?? How did that happen!! And how has it been 'fixed'?

PART OF!

Been fixed by replacing the cover with a new one.

It is indeed fixed now. The first clutch cover was faulty and the replacement one now works just fine.

It's running perfectly now too Chris.....replaced the coil and it runs great

LOL... I was teasing...but this time it actually WAS the coil. Luckily I had a couple of spare ones kicking aorund!

The engine would barely start. He replaced the coil. It started and ran fine...

Fairly conclusive i'd have said.....It was CERTAINLY the coil

No - if it would start - the coil WAS working! But of course - it may not be the correct coil for the system. Can you put a meter on the terminals to read the Ohms??

It would start in as much as it would fire, chug for a second or two and then cut out again

Not now I can't - it's on the scrap pile!

If it fired - the coil was working. You were too quick to condemn it. This happens all the time !

Roy, there will come a time when you'll have to concede that, just occasionally, it IS the coil

Oh yes - indeed it CAN be, which is why I say 'never' in inverted commas. But if your engine started at all - there must have been sparks - so the coil was working. Pity to have scrapped it - you likely now have an unreliable modern coil - and they DO fail, all too frequently.
