STARTER MOTOR TO FLYWHEEL CLEARANCE

Post by philip jones 51 »

Hi,
Does anbody know the clearance between the flywheel starter ring and the starter motor bendix, when in a stationary position. Does it have a minimum\maximum clearance to operate correctly.
Regards,
PHILIP JONES.

Engine being worked on being a 1098 cc.

There is no adjustment so the actual clearance is not important, just bolt the starter motor on and it works

Unless you are fitting a 1275 engine - when indeed there can be clearance problems...... Is that the case here?

Hi,
Fitting a 1.1 lcv marina engine with a six bolt flywheel which I am fitting a standard 1098 morris minor flywheel, (drilled out to suit six bolt fitting).
I am fitting a type 9 ford cortina five speed box with modified bellhousing.
When assemble together, engine clutch bellhousing and gearbox : trial fitted starter motor and the bendix is just touching the flywheel starter ring.
Problem when rotating the engine via gearbox the starter motor bendix engages on starter ring.
What I am asking is what is this clearance required to avoid this problem and best way to achieve this.
Regards,
PHILIP JONES.

Hmmm - not heard of a 6 bolt 1.1 engine! Sure it's not a 1275?? But anyway - can only suggest you will need to grind the edge of the ring gear (or the edge of the bendix teeth) to get clearance - or try another starter - there may be enough variation to get away with it. Otherwise - you would need to dismantle the bendix drive - and fit a spacer (washer) to move the bendix slightly further along the shaft - although in truth I'm not sure how that would work...... I suppose you could face off the mounting flange of the starter to move the body slightly closer in thus gaining clearance for the bendix drive.

I haven't either... BUT I could see it being reality.

How many 1.1 marina engines do you see? The marina engines have a large flywheel and they would have to do something to make it work with the marina gearbox

But I would have though there would be a special flywheel... easier than a crankshaft!

A 3mm (approx) spacer/washer is needed on the shaft and a touch of epoxy glue to hold it to the bottom of the shaft. The bendix will have to be removed and I think a special tool is required, unless someone knows differently. I say this due to my own failed attempt to remove it myself.
I did toy with the idea of using a (split) spring washer and forcing that on.

Yes - you need a special little spring compressor to get the bendix off. Here's one! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STARTER-MOTOR ... 27cbbde15b I made my own.........
