Hi,

I am looking at converting my 1971, 1098cc traveller to electronic ignition for convenience. Has anybody done this and what did you use?

I am looking at the Powerspark site and am getting confused, why the big difference in price between Bull Motif and Powerspark ( Powermax or Lumenition electronic ignition)? Is my top entry distributor cap a 25d4 or something else or doesn't it matter?

I you really feel you MUST do this - then a 45D from SimonBBC or Accuspark is the best way forward. Usually the best price is through ebay.

Thanks for the replies. I have found the distributor type in an old Morris workshop manual and a Haynes manual, it is a 25D4.

Bmcecosse, What would the difference be between the 25D and the 45D that you suggest?

I was in half a mind to do this, then I thought about the fact that I will change the points once every 2 years only which means that at £2.50 a set I need to live another 60 years to reach the cost of an electronic ignition, by which time if by some miracle I am not dead I will in fact be 115 years of age.
Having achieved this miraculous stage , I will be incontinent bald and impotent, encapsulated in a bath chair clutching telegrams from the queen, being pushed around by a young filly called Tracey or Chimene, spending my days explaining to her the benefits of carburation over direct injection and trying to convice her I "stiil have me wick you know" in as convincing a manner as I can muster.
In addition my kids will have flogged the minor long before to the benefit of some total stranger and will spend the proceeds on a 3 piece suite or some such.
I think I shall leave the points in after all.
Which brings me to a very apt joke

Love the post . Using the Powerspark means I will have to live another 12 years and as I plan on milking my "gold plated pension" I should be in pocket.

The 45D is a much better dizzy - later design. I too am v happy with my good old points.......

This has been talked about a lot . I must say again stick to points ignition. if electronic fails its a trailer home.Just carry a spare set of points and a screw driver with you. I v never needed mine anyway. Dont waste your money.
Points are VERY Reliable. Keep it standard. But im sure alot of people ill ague this point with me on this pardon the pun.

My tuppence worth is that the quality of points available now has deteriorated over the years while that of electronic ignition has improved.
My guess is that you now need to check the points gap at half the recommended mileage as the heal wears down so much faster now it's made from cheap plastic.

BMC will have a stash of NOS Unipart points and condensors tucked away somewhere. Can't beat 'em.

Hi Mark i dont disagree with that Although iv never had that problem with bad quality points. And granted i clean and adjust my gap once a year .If people feel thats to much heart Ache , Well there you go.

I Think on average i do about 5000 a year as mine is a daily driver. My only car. No boaring modern stuff.

Maybe they are better quality points, 6000 miles is the recommended interval so you are right on the money.

1000 miles a month in mine and wouldn't swap for a lecky ignition (at least, not yet ). Did consider fitting a sparkrite to it, but that was mainly for the immobiliser on it, and the fact it was 'on the shelf' ;)
