Cooling sysytem and block flushing

Post by jaguar68 »

Hi chaps,

I've recently changed the engine in my '69 4 door Minor for a 1275cc Morris Ital A+. The engine runs well, but before it was replaced I cracked the block drain plug only to be faced by a solid wall of chalk. I removed this concretion the best I could using a screwdriver and replace the drain plug.

As the engine was a bit of an unknown quantity, I'm thinking of flushing the radiator, heater matrix and hopefully the block. I know that from various posts on the forum, people have recommended using either kettle descaler or drain cleaner to perform the flush. I have, however, some Holts Speed Flush and some of the Holts 2 part Rad Flush, which I purchased before reading the forum posts  .

Does anyone have any experience in using either of these products and which would be the best one to use. The radiator is only 3-4 years old, as it was replaced when the car was rebuit due to the original radiator experiencing severe "fin rot".

Also, is it possible to back flush the system using a bucket, as I'm not sure that the garden hose will reach as far as the car, which is parked in the road.

Regards

John

I'm guessing the Holts stuff is just expensive drain cleaner. Go for it! Many trips withe the bucket should be fine.

Thanks Roy.

I'll start with the Speed Flush as that's the easiest to use and see how things go.

Cheers

Interested in hearing how it goes with the bucket, I'm going to have to flush my system without a hose soon.

It might be worth buying another garden hose and some couplings
