Does anyone know what this bell housing is a about, I think it was removed from the back of a 1098 many years ago, wondering if it is part of a 5 speed box kit. Whats your thoughts?[frame]

Looks likely. A bigger picture! and of the side of the bellhousing might help more. Early 5 speeds were just a minor one, with a metal plate welded on in effect.

The starter motor is on the opposite side to a Minor and the bolt hole spacings look wrong to me.

It looks to be the original cast housing from a Ford Type 9.
It was probably removed to fit the box into a Minor with a new bellhousing.
Probably only worth weiging in i'm afraid (as they are quite heavy!!)
