just tested the battery. looks like the dynamo is buggered.

12.4V unloaded, unconnected. (pretest)
11.63V engine running.
11.19V engine running, lights (main beam), heater.
11.93V unloaded, unconnected. (post test)

But was this with a cold or hot engine, and did you rev it during testing? The dynamo will not cut in below a certain engine speed.

cold engine, but I was revving it lightly.

Polarity not changed - even by accident at some point? Ok - so you need to test the dynamo - remove the fan belt - take the wires off the dynamo. Take a length of cable and join it to BOTH the terminals on the dynamo - now touch it to the non-earth connection on the battery - does the dynamo spin round ??

Can someone talk Onion through "Flashing" the Dynamo (generator over here.) It's a quick contact between battery and field coils. might help, can't hurt.

The test above will do that anyway.......but it's only done if the polarity has been changed......

dynamo spins clockwise when connected up to non-earth (+ve).

If it spins - it's fine ! So - the problem is either with the wiring - or the Regulator box. Connect it all up again - and see if this has 'fixed' it.

Are you some kind of deity?
Reaching 14.7V with throttle, and 13.9V with lights and heater. Haven't done anything other than reconnect it.

Still only one start between external charging though :/ but that could be down to me not letting it run for long enough.

He's not deity...but he's definitely a" Legend in his own lifetime "...and there a lot of people out there who are grateful for his sage advice, freely given.
Roy also has a few followers who choose not to take / listen to his advice and they are still out there pondering why it went oh so wrong for them ( doing it their way ) !!

I think the 'naughty boy' image suits me rather better..... At some point I suspect the polarity HAD been changed - by motoring the dynamo - it's now correct polarity......so give it a decent run. Now - back to the other problems.....indeed the vacuum connections on that carb and dizzy look very poor indeed - you need to sort that out.

Somewhere in between the two extremes I'd say.
Anyway, it's a gold painted engine with late carb and dizzy and an early type vacuum pipe.
Well worth getting the later, cheaper, type if only to take it out of the equation.
Of course if the advance/retard isn't working it won't help much.

I note the HT leads are crossing and touching each other, a condition that I always try to avoid, that, and contact with the bodywork and engine.

My dizzy was in that approximate position. It has been wrongly oriented when someone sometime reassembled the engine (not me, honest! some PO.) There are steps in the workshop manual that I followed rather easily to correctly index it.
Section AA.28 "To Refit The Distributor Drive Gear."
When correctly done, the vacuum advance will be on the rear side, and pretty much vertical.
I guess theoretically it shouldn't make any difference, but it is now easier to reach the clamp, and the wires look a bit more tidy.

Well, I've found the reason for the tape.[frame]Image[/frame]They all just slide off each other without it. New plastic pipe is on order, but in the mean time should I replace the tape, or leave it?

I've had a check of the HT cables, and theres at least 1/4" between them now, is that enough or do I need to do some more rearranging?

Hi,

Save the tape for other things. Be careful as the female thread in the carb may be damaged but probably not.

When you remove the split plastic pipe You may see what I mean.

Got to admit your photographs to reveal quite a lot.
