What are these please?

Post by GPO_Van »

Hi All
I have 3 questions
1 of 3
To cut a long story short my 1959 traveller restoration has dragged on and boxes of bits have been shuffled (bit like my brain at the moment).
What are these? and where do the go? I seem to remember them being at the back end! They are fairly thin.
Thank you very much for reading

They definitely go under the clamps that hold the front seats to the floor. I've got two theories as to where they go, but not particularly sure.

Most probably, they go right on top of the floor. As you have 4 holes and 2 bolts for each clamp (to allow for slightly repositioning of the seats if desired) and if the 2 unused holes were left uncovered, then moisture could splash (or flow if fording) up and soak your carpets. These plates crudely cover up these holes to prevent water ingress.

Alternatively, they go above the carpet so that the seat frame is trapped between plates and clamps. Possibly to stop the carpet wearing out so much... But unlikely.

Most likely to be the first one, as to be the second they wouldn't need to be longer one end than the other.

I'm pretty sure it's your 2nd suggestion Chris. I've seen several of these plates and all have slight distortion where the sear frame has rubbed.

That may be so... but it could be from people putting them in the wrong place!

If that was their intended purpose, they would only be as long as the seat clamps. Not longer at one end.

The extra length is to cover the "spare" hole.

Yes, to cover the 2 holes NOT being used.

Plugged up with some form of sealant on postal vans n/s.
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Yes the length does cast doubt on my theory.

The two Minors I have had both had those bits of metal over the floor, under the seat pivot bar.

I assumed they fit on top of the carpet to stop carpet fraying with the movement of the seat pivot bar !

Took my carpets and seats out this weekend to give my floorpan a lick of paint (Had a little welding done recently on it).

Mine were above the carpet, with the seat bar resting on them.

Just out of curiosity - would they be that rusty if all they did is sit on top of the carpet? My minor doesn't have these..

Mine are that length and are on top of the carpet. The reason they will be rusty will most likley be down to the carpets getting wet from people with wet shoes when its raining.

Why don't we ask the guy who bought 'the best minor in the world' where his are fitted--above or below? :D

He's probably got them above and below

I did look at the underneath of that minor at a show a few weeks ago. It had bolts in the unused holes (fitted from below) to stop water and dirt getting up and in.

That's a good idea, I think I'll cut some setscrews down and do likewise! Then I can keep my plates on top of the carpet! :D

Thank you all for taking the time to pass comments on my bits of metal, and yes the are a perfect fit over the bolt holes and they cover the spare holes.
When I’ve cleaned them up and painted I will fit under the carpet and put bolts up through the spare holes as was suggested.
Again thanks :D
