Two speed clap hands wipers?
Hi,
I just wondered if the existing two speed windscreen wiper kits would work on the older 'clap hands' style of wipers?
I only ask as it would be nice to have an intermittent option on mine and a slightly faster main wipe, as mine is as tad slow (though this is probably down to a worn motor and / or bushes on mine) and they were never that fast in the first place.
One of my reasons for asking is that I got caught out in a heavy downpour not long ago and visibility was zero (with the wipers on!).
I know that the plastic gearing wheels are interchangeable between Moggie wiper motors, as I swapped mine out of my original motor to my existing one which is for a newer Moggie, so that it would work with my clap hands wipers.
But would I be able to transfer these plastic gears into one of the two speed motors? Would I need to?
Many thanks for any advice.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
the first question is do you want two speed as in slow and fast or intermittent and slow?
I am in the process of finishing an article on fitting 2 speed wiper motors to moggies for the custom and modified register. so i can send it out to you when i have finished it if you would like.
the problem that i see with intermittent / slow / fast is the switch as i am not aware of any 4 position toggle switch that suits the moggy dash... ok standing to be corrected and if some one can great just give me the reference number.
Of course you can go for a 4 position rotary switch but..
to answer your final question the steel part of the wheel is the bit you need to swap over as that controls the sweep arch of the wipers and the single speed wheel wile not fit a two speed motor without some serious mods.. but for a clap hand the triumph 2000 and later spitfires had 100 degree wheels so are a straight swap..

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
You can use a light switch for the two speed wipers. There used to be a kit for variable speed wipers controlled by a rotary switch.

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
I suppose you could fit a rheostat which will give variable speeds but might struggle if you set it really low.
Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
Yes - you can fit a rheostat.......but it must go in series with the Field supply.....NOT in the main power feed.

you could fit a rheostat but would that not just give you slow not intermittent?

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
I have used a light switch to give us intermittent and normal single speed, which works fine, but I would love a three position pull-out switch, so that I could go to 'intermittent - slow - fast' and then I could fit a two-speed motor as well.
Does anyone know of such a switch? At the moment the row of choke knob and switches appear visually to be as '1958' and I would like to keep the appearance. Not much to ask!!

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
I think there is a two-speed kit for clap hands wipers available from a trusted supplier of many years standing in the second city! See back of club magazine for details. As for three position push/pull switches, it seems that there is quite a demand for them in the marine world. It may be that one of these could be adapted and used for an on slow, on fast and intermittent wipe. A quick trawl through the net shows this item at around £8 but I'm sure there are more out there onto which a genuine Morris 'W' button can be added! Good luck and let us know if you succeed!

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
the trouble is you need a 4 position switch not a 3 position..
position 1 off
position 2 slow
position 3 fast
position 4 intermittent
maplin sell an intermittent kit which you could wire through a light switch and relays to give off / normal / intermittent
you could of course go for a 2 switch solution but not for me..

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
Yes, 3 + 1 = 4!
I have the equivalent of the Maplins kit using a VW Golf programmable wash/wipe unit, so my light switch cum wiper switch, fitted with the original 'W' knob, gives me off-intermittent-single wipe. The intermittent delay is either the default by pulling the switch to the first position and leaving it there, or progammable by pulling the switch to the first position, push in back in, wait the delay time that you want, and pull it out again. Intermittent is then set to the delay required, as per the original VW application!
Very, very messing wiring, as the park circuit in the standard Minor wiper motor is different to what is now a common way - I think the 2-speed motor would be easier to use, but could not find a 4-position switch at the time. A separate flick wash/wipe switch works washers and wipers perfectly through the VW unit, but no matter how much I fiddled, I could not get the wipers to stay on for the normal VW few seconds after the switch was released. I think it is to do with the park circuit.
Brucek, Can you give me link to the one you found for £8 please?

Sorry Islipminor - I meant to attach this to my last post:
Of course it is a 4 position switch and one day I'll learn how to count!

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
Lots of very interesting food for thought.
To clarify, my original question was meant to be about intermittent / normal speed. Sorry if it appeared vague.
A fast option may be too much for my clap hands wipers to cope with!!
Many thanks to all of you.

are you sure that is the correct link as that is to a 3 position switch
off
on A
on A + B
so the same as the moggy light switch

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
I'm following this topic with fervent interest -- I'd love to have two-speed wipers on Mog without altering its looks! Sadly I don't have much to contribute at this point. Perhaps this is a dumb question, but can someone explain the advantage of an intermittent wipe over a slow wipe? It seems to me they'd accomplish the same objective...
The way to a man's heart may be making food, but the way to my heart is buying me car parts!
Come read about my Minor at An American Moggie.

Here's a US link to a 4 position switch at $22US http://brillman.com/store/b7112-4-posit ... witch.html
Originally I misread the earlier post and figured a 3 position switch was actually a 4 position cos I had forgotten about the intermittent wipe. An ordinary light switch would be ok for either Off, intermittent, normal speed or off, wipe slow, wipe fast (wich would also link to the kit available. I just miscounted the number of positions required for 3 functions plus off.

i do not know if you can find a 4 position toggle switch? If you could you would have my complete admiration!
you can have 2 speed wipers ( provided you do not have a split screen) without changing the outwards appearance of your car, you would notice the difference when you open the bonnet, but it really is not a significant change. The advantage of intermitent is when it is raining slightly, if you leave the wipers on slow they can end up "bouncing" over the screen distracting you but more importantly damaging the rubber blade.Fingolfin wrote:I'm following this topic with fervent interest -- I'd love to have two-speed wipers on Mog without altering its looks! Thanks for the link, have emailed them for freight costs. It looks ideal and I just hope that the existing 'W' knob can be grafted on in some way! Here's a US link to a 4 position switch at $22US http://brillman.com/store/b7112-4-posit ... witch.html
I want to replace our wiper motor as it is the original from 1958, so can't be long for this world! I have put off doing it for years, as I would like 2-speed + intermittent + a standard looking 'W' switch!

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
Has anyone actually managed to fit the Maplins Velleman intermittent kit to a Minor with clap hands wipers? Not wanting 2 speed wipers but would like the intermittent option.I have the kit which has a 12v DC input connector and 3 junction blocks marked ABCDEF.The instruction manual seems more about making up the kit than fitting it in the car and I'm obviously too thick to figure out how to wire it up.

Re: Two speed clap hands wipers?
Tysonn,
If my interpretation of the Velleman Fig 2 wiring diagram is correct, then the diagram below is all you will need for the standard Minor wiper circuit.
Assuming that you are still positive earth? On the input side, connect a fused supply to -12v terminal on the Velleman board, connect the +12v to earth (body). Make sure that the Velleman board is kept away from the body and any other electrical connections.
On the output side connect terminals A and C across the existing wiper switch - it doesn't matter which goes to which switch terminal.
The way it will work is that the Velleman intermittent will provide a temporary earth connection, the wiper motor completes a single wipe cycle and the park circuit will park the wipers in the normal way. Using the standard wiper switch will put the wipers on permanently as normal.
If you want to get a bit more clever, you could use a headlight switch (the 'W' knob fits in place of the 'L') to switch on the Velleman circuit in the 'side' position and then the 'headlight' position to turn on the wipers normally. To do this you will need a relay as well. Let me know if you would like this and I will draw up the circuit for you.

Cheers for that Richard. The cars now negative earth.I would appreciate your diagram if you can be bothered. What is the point of the other 4 terminals then? Are they for use with a multispeed motor?LOL no bother building the kit but a different matter fitting it.
