Pretty sure your hub is NOT worn - if the bearing stands slightly proud, then it's correct. As for the idea that the hub can 'stretch' - well - highly unlikely, to put it mildly!!!! If everyone took the attitude of 'keeping secrets' and 'not telling' where would we be? I'll happily share any knowledge i have with anyone who needs it - and have done for 30,000+ posts now... I suspect the reason the 'information' is not being shared is that it is a load of old nonsense and will be shown as such if revealed on the forum! The problem before was traced to over-thick gaskets.

Well it's a good job most of us here are capable of solving our own problems with the help of folk here that get pleasure from passing on knowledge. The manual is saying that the bearing should stick out 1-4 thou beyond the face of the hub AND the paper washer, so as the bearing is gripped. The only thought in my mind is the paper washer is not touched! Presumably the O ring makes the seal.

In any case, folks, I took one of the hubs off of Stiltzkin, tidied it up, put in a new oil seal, drifted in the bearing from the other hub, and placed it on the car. You will be pleased to know that this replacement hub exhibits no lateral play, and the halfshaft meets it quite happily, so -- problem solved!

Well done ! Would have been interesting to take a depth reading of both hubs. So - do tell us what happens when you refit that hub to the other axle !!

Since Roy has clearly done extensive research into bearings he can explain it all. He did an excellent job on the front bearing issue.

yep, it often works if you change the hub for another. racked my brains for a week or so until someone mentioned that if there is play in the hub/bearing (in and out movement), then it maybe that the car had been left over a period of time and when moved/dragged from it's resting place, the bearing 'turned' inside the hub and 'mullered' it.Fingolfin wrote:In any case, folks, I took one of the hubs off of Stiltzkin, tidied it up, put in a new oil seal, drifted in the bearing from the other hub, and placed it on the car. i changed the hub for a wolsey 1500 one that has the rubber ring and i've not only cured the virbration from the rear, i don't lose EP90 all over my rear break linings anymore. i have a 'water tight' seal now........
