Advice please on what carb etc?

Finally getting away from the body and around to getting the mechanics fettled(1275 midget engine in '59 converted saloon).At present its fitted with a standard 1098 carb and manifold with standard new exhaust.I'm far too old to be a speed freak I just want to utilise the power available from the engine.I enclose a pic of the parts that came with the car and that I picked up along the way.Carb is a (supposedly)rebuilt 1 1/2" .Could one of our resident very helpful tech experts please advise what I need to get(links to parts on ebay or if you have any to sell much appreciated)as I am the first to admit I'm far from being a mechanic.[frame][/frame]

The top two (left and right) would be the original for the car. The left would bolt on top of the right.

Everything else is interesting. The shiny inlet manifold will be perfect for the HIF38 carb (if it is indeed 1 1/2 inches). You could use the cast all in one manifold at the bottom of the picture, but that only gives you 2 fixings for the carb, rather than the 4 you get with the alloy inlet manifold.

You could cut the inlet manifold off the all in one, so that you have a separate exhaust manifold. Compare the two exhaust outlet sizes. If they're both the same, then you could use the bottom manifold to fit to a standard Minor exhaust, but this could stifle the engine. If the outlet is bigger on the manifold at the bottom of your picture, then you could use that and buy a large bore system from most of the minor suppliers which would fit onto that manifold. Alternatively, you can just use the alloy inlet and buy a full exhaust system with LCB tubular exhaust manifold.

The plate in the middle, with the 4 bolt pattern, is a heat shield suitable for use with your carb. Should keep the heat of the exhaust away from the float chamber in the bottom of that carb.

The only other things I can think of are sorting out a throttle cable, and an air filter. I'd plump for a K&N one myself, others will say they're too noisy, but I'm very happy with mine!

As above - really you need a 1.75" carb to make the most of a good 1275, but it will run with that carb.

Just measured up.Carb is 38mm and the diameter of the exhaust manifold flange is around 28mm on both so for now I think I'll cut the inlet manifold off the mini one and use the alloy inlet.I'll start looking for a bigger carb and LCB to fit when I get them.There doesnt appear to be any facility for fitting a choke cable in the carb so thats a priority.

Rather than cutting the one-piece manifolds, could you not use the single exhaust manifold w/a blanking plate on it?

That early manifold flows horrendously. It's rubbish on a 948, dread to think how bad it would be on a 1275!

If you're after a quick and easy setup for now, you could use the mini manifold (bottom of pic) complete. You can bolt the carb to it despite only having 2 studs not 4... It was good enough for the HS4 afterall.

Far far better to use the alloy manifold (without water heating) - it's worth 5 bhp against the one piece manifold. And as above - DO NOT use the early exhaust manifold - it's useless.

To be honest I cant see any difference between the early standard manifold and the mini one as far as the hole sizes and internal diameters are concerned which would cause one to be a far worse choice to fit but I asked for knowledgeable advice and got it.I'll use the mini one with the inlet cut off and use the alloy inlet for the time being.

...and remember, it serves 2 cylinders unlike the other two which only serve 1 each.
