What grade of oil should i use

I like to use a better quality oil than the Wilko one - not that there's anything wrong with it. Halfords do a Classic 20/50 that is very like the old Duckhams oil used to be. About £18 for a gallon(equivelant) can.

Wilko is fine for a Minor - just don't expect it to last for ever.....

If there`s nothing wrong with it then why not use it? Personally if I do the recommended mileage for an oil change then the oil and filter gets changed, if not, the oil gets changed along with the filter every year just before the MOT.
An extra £8 for a tin instead of a plastic bottle is the only difference I can see between the oils (though I am not a chemist and cant test the composition of the oil)

Last time I used cheap oil like this, which was 'specially blended for older, higher mileage vehicles' (which reads your car is a worn out banger so it doesn't matter if you use this muck), it smelt foul in the can and the engine sounded rough after only a thousand - if that - miles.

If you bought say a brand new BMW and used cheap oil and then came to make a claim for a mechanical defect, they could refuse on the grounds that poor oil was used.
