As long as there IS a gap - it's fine. Small gap is excellent - only snag is it doesn't leave any room for wear before the gap closes up completely......

I'm assuming you mean the ignition points:
extremely small gap or excessive large gap is actually a problem. - this does not allow the coil to fully charge/discharge resulting in a weak spark and potential missfire under load.

As for 'has the gap closed up' - you need to look at the points to find out.


The SU fuel pump also has points - if they are burnt and/or crusty (it happens) the fuel pump will stop and pretty soon after the engine dies.

If the points gap keeps on closing up - suspect it needs a small dab of grease on the plastic 'heel' that bears on the dist cam. Condensor also a suspect, a bad one will cause burning of the contacts creating a 'pit' and 'trough' on each respectively.
