52 Splitscreen Windshield

Post by indian301 »

I need two new pieces of windshield glass cut for my 1952 Splitscreen convertible. I fortunately have one side to use as a template. Should I have the glass cut to the original dimensions? Or smaller? I have a new gasket made in the UK. I remember reading a post about having it cut 1/16" undersize.

Thanks, Dave

its not the actual size thats the problem its the thickness of the new glass that causes the problem, the normal flat glass(laminated)is what they use for side windows and is too thin and also isn't suitable for front screens, the ones I had made up just would't seal without loads of mastic and they looked auful,so I was fortunate to find some toughened second hand ones' I believe other have had better luck so will be along soon.

My son was making a coffee table for a school project and it had to have a toughened glass top, the place that cut the glass had it toughened and it carried a mark on it saying it was toughened, not sure if it would be suitable for car use though, but worth while asking the glass suppliers as they might know and may be able to supply the correct thickness glass as well

Get it laminated if you can up to modern screen spec, otherwise scary if you go through it. :o

Or try to find a laminated standard straight screen, go to a company with a waterjet cutting machine, and make a copy from the original one.
When you can make a DXF or DWG drawing from the original screen, the guys with the waterjet cutting machine will cut your glass.
When needed, I can ask my old colleagues for addresses in your neighborhood.
At my company we have 2 waterjet machines, but this is to far away for an easy screen.
I know laminated screens are on the market, because I have a 10 mm version on the roof of my house.
