Boot lid not lining up?

Post by benwall101 »

Hi
Does any one have any ideas why my Boot lid is not lining up?
i was told when i brought the car the the chrome hindges had just been changed on the boot and bonet.
Also the lock on the boot will not hold it down properly.
Is it because the hinges need to be moved up a notch so that the tips are touching along the bottom of the rear window or do the hinges need to be adjusted under the boot?
or do i just have a damadged boot?
Thanks Ben

The number plate light should earth through the o/s boot hinge, there it a ring terminal on the end of an earth lead which fits under the hinge securing nut.
The light may also earth through the boot lock when the boot is closed.

Slacken the hinge nuts and fiddle it about till it fits! Then adjust the locking catch to suit.

A picture of the seal that's been used would be informative too.

Boot lids have two nuts on the lid part and one on the main body on each of the two hinges. The holes they pass through are larger than the studs. I lost one of my hinges one windy day when the wind lifted the boot lid out of the support strut hole and tried to move the entire lid over the car , one of the hinges fractured. As the lid was very rusty I got another one , but trying to get all six nuts into the right place was a real pain. Back seat out , one person in boot from inside saloon with the decent socket set and two persons outside with timber wedges adjusting the fit. Is this how it was done in the factory to get the vertical and lateral movement correct ?

I'm with MarkyB on this one, check the sealing rubber, as this once happened to me. But it is uncanny that the problem started when you fitted new hinges. Will a good shove down not click it into place?

Mine is a little proud on the lower RH side also - LH side is fine and boot locks no prob. I think he lid itself may be a little warped.
