Fuel gauge not working

Post by beero »

Now I have got her on the road (at long last) I found the mileometer didn't work (damn)
Speedo out, took it apart, found a small clip on the detent out of place, clipped it back in, job done! Brilliant - or so I thought.
Put the speedo back in - fuel gauge not working. (damn and blast!)

Speedo out again. After a couple of hours testing everything I found the second coil in the gauge goes to earth and it will not work unless the speedo is earthed. My speedo is screwed into a nicely painted dash and it was earthing via the speedo cable, which I didn't attach because the fuel gauge didn't work!! ARGHHHH!!!

On further investigation the main beam warning lamp and the speedo illumination lamps didn't work without the speedo cable attached either! Didn't notice that earlier or all would have been clear.

You should arrange a better direct earth - don't rely on the cable.

Yes, done that Roy, more of a warning so nobody makes the same stupid mistake.

It's not the mistakes that are important - it's what you learn from them that makes the difference in the long term.
