Underseal on New Metalwork

I am not a great fan of black underseal put directly on new metalwork. I would rather prime ( though the old red lead oxide is no longer available , probably just as well for our health ). Then a couple of undercoats then a top coat of stone resistant , preferably coloured paint.

Any other ideas

Epoxy 2-pack over etch primer would be my first choice. The etch bites into the steel surface and makes a good start on holding your paint on.
These guys seem to know more about it than me. I googled "epoxy etch"...

People like JLH are much more knowledgeable on the subject. He might have an input if you ask over on the other side?

If cost is a factor then a spray can of etch, a thickish primer, seal the edges with Tigerseal in a silicone gun thingy, stonechip and waterproof it with gloss (stonechip evidently not waterproof)
