Rear Dampers

Post by rjt1951 »

Hi,
I have removed the rear dampers for cleaning and am going to drain and re-fill. Look like they have not been touched for a few years. What is the best thing to use for flushing through and is there anything I should check before they go back? Have ordered new bushes for the arm that fits to chassis although existing seem good.

SAE 40 oil - sold as 'compressor oil' I understand in some places. Failing that - SAE 30. Flush through a couple of times then fill to 'not quite' the top.

Just put back together and what a difference it has made to the ride quality!
Worth doing if you have not checked for a few years. A bit of WD40 on the bolts an hour or two before removal and it's not difficult.

Well done. You may need to top them up again after any air inside works it's way to the top.

Thanks, what a pain that there is no way of topping up without taking the whole damper off again! I think it is the only thing Mr Morris did not get right.

You should be able to top them up with them fitted. The filler hole is even at an angle so that when fitted, the filler hole is level!

On ONE side it's level and can be filled - not so on the other.... But just slcken both bolts and remove one - then pivot it round on the other, top up, and then refit/tighten the bolts. Job done !
