more torque on 948
my father would like a bit more torque on his 948 convertible to cope with the hills etc. He is thinking of putting a 1098 in as we have a spare, but i believe the afficionados reckon the 948 is a nicer engine? is it possible to get the same power as a 1098 by doing a few bolt on mods, or just go for 1098 or 1275!

A 12G940 head is the nearest you'll get in terms of bolt on accessory to match a 1098 I think, others will correct me..
With my 948, amongst many changes I am thinking of, one is to rebore the block to +65thou to accept mini 998 pistons, but that's not really bolt on

Well, yes - the 1098 has more power and is an easy swap. The 948 is a much smoother/nicer engine (because of shorter stroke) and will make the same power if you fit the 1098 camshaft and the 1098 cylinder head (after 60 thou skim) - but only at ~ 10% more revs than the 1098....... So it's not really 'more torque'. The 1275 is likely to suit him rather better if hills are the problem.
Ref the 940 head comment - this will give more power, but not exactly 'more torque' because again it relies on more revs and would not be ideal for slogging up hills.....

ok so, we are planning to take the engine out when we do some body work in the winter, will it be better to recon and mod the 948 or put the 1098, or give him my slightly tweaked 1098 and get myself a 1275 for the pick up!

If it is torque he is after, the 1098 is probably the best option..

Re: more torque on 948
When I fitted a newish 948 engine to my 4 door , it purred well enough up and over the Surrey Hills ( not the run into Westerham didnt try that , but most along the North Downs ). Does find the long drag up some of the M1 hills a bit tiring , I tend to take the A roads at 50mph , more twists but better overall speed and less traffic.
