head gasket

Post by steve c »

hi, never been totaly happy with my suspect head gasket, car ran well, slight mayenaze in oil filler cap, but no obvious mixing of oil and water, but i did get a dribble of water and what looked like small air bubbles from the side of the head joint. + a small amount of oil appearing on the head studs? --i have taken the head off and the copper surface looks as if it has streaks running accross parts of it, the gasket has not blown in the normal way, i would be gratefull for any ideas on this before i fit the new gasket tomorrow, i have uploaded a photo of the gasket, and hopfully you can see the streaking on the surface, regards steve[frame]Image[/frame]

Looks perfect - I would re-use it........ just joking really, but in my poor/student past I certainly reused gaskets much worse looking than that one! And never had any problems. Clean everything, smear of grease on both faces, torque the head down to 45 ft lbf - and retorque it after the first heat cycle - and reset the valve gaps.

thanks BMC, it was the air bubbles and water sepping from the head joint that made me remove head to check, i will follow your advice on the new one, while i was in the garage getting dirty, i also removed the sump, ( leaking gasket at the rear) and the remains of oil in the sump had quite a lot of milkey muck in it, bit worrying as it was off and cleaned out only six months ago.

To ensure that the head is flat, check the head surface w/a good straight before you replace it.

Sorry if I offended anyone, but the moderator(s) never censored it.
