Back to school... advice needed

Good evening!

I have just joined as I need advice.

I used to be a Moggie owner (Trafalgar Blue Traveller FFK940H), but am trying, through my work as a teacher, to get children interested in classic car restoration and, if possible, in the venerable Moggie.

Basically the plan will be to get funding to purchase a restoration project and restore it, teaching the children in an after-school club, about mechanics, servicing and how they don't actually need a modern car. The restoration would take up to a year, and then we would sell the finished project to finance the next year's work.

So, my question to the Morris Minor community is this - is it at all possible to find a project that isn't an absolute shed for under £500? If it cannot be done I will have to turn my attention to another classic. Ideally some kind of idea tonight would be great, particularly as I am writing a 'business plan' for the club tonight!

there are alot of morris minos out there. there will be one out there under £500 that is a good solid car and just needs light work and others that are absolutley knackered. its just finding one at the right time and right price. so answer to your question is a morris minor will be a great project and yes you will be able to find one have a look on ebay or car and classic there might be one there. be carefull with ebay as there are alot on there and some are quite rubbish thanks

Great project well done.

For £500 you will struggle to find a project that will be restorable in a school year by unskilled school children and remember in your funding application to allow for parts and repair panels. If you haven't already you could try an ad in the wanted section as you may find someone who will give you a project car very cheaply for your good cause?

Would it be better to try and restore smaller areas of a car so your trainees learn some mechanical or body work skills first?

Establish some contact with a local car restorer as they might be delighted to assist with such a project and might supply some parts or their own time at cost?

In my experience of funding applications, funders like you to raise some money yourself so maybe a car boot sale or two to get some funds in the bank and show them you are serious and in the long term can be self sufficiant.

indeed the business plan is to get some funding... one thing which we will want to do is teach the children to do fluid checks and top ups so they can offer it as a service to staff... so much to think of... so much to plan

Might be an idea to have a classic as an ideal, not a starting car, and to approach a local car showroom about donating a part/ex that they get in but know they will not get much return on...
