Help Identifying a part please

Post by Down_Under »

Hello all.

I am wondering if anyone can help me out of a family fix please. I live in Australia and my father in law is a true blue aussie with an avid interest in all makes and models of classic cars.

He especially loves the British ones and has set me some sort of initiation test I think to be fully accepted into his brood.

Seeing me as his only Pom he thinks I must know everything and anything about his beloved British cars too and has recently purchased a part from a local car boot sale that he proudly showed me but is struggling to identify exactly.

He thinks it is a water manifold of a Morris car but is unsure exactly what model or year it may be.

I know this is a long shot and a huge punt but I was wondering if someone better than I could have a look at the picture below and help me put his mind at rest.

I am open to ridicule if the photo is not so good or I have provided zero details that might help us narrow things down a bit but I think in his challenge he was intrigued by the shape of pipe in some way as being unusual - I may be wrong or getting set up a little here too. I know it is not a glass hammer and isn't needing a lick of tartan paint though but other than that I a gullable.

The label on the pipe reads Morris Minor 1929 Manifold but Father In Law is not sure and wanted to know what model it may belong too.

Any help at all would be much appreciated and help him in his fun. He is scouring old books and the internet too so I think he may be serious. A Holden it is not!!!

All the best to everyone and keep up the great site - We see Moggy's on walkabout all the time overhere and they are iconic.

Kind Regards to all[frame]Image[/frame]

You may be better on www.prewarminor.com as the year is 1929.
There are other sites dealing with pre-war minors too, predominantly here are post war minors, good luck though, hope you pass the test :D

The question you should be asking him is why buy a part that he has no idea about or use for :D

Check out this link

http://www.prewarminor.com/#/minor-engines/4531208958

Looks a lot like the vertical pipe you can just see on the front of the engine in the first picture running behind the distributor which would explain the need for the bulge in the pipe run.

Hope that helps

Thanks so much for the replies everybody. This is brilliant and very kind.

Especially moggiethouable and certainly leyther8008 - the links provided are brilliant and very much appreciated. Also affirming that the Poms are just as helpful as Aussie's too - although Col says he already knew the scots where all right anyway.

In response to C6Dave, ha ha ha I agree but I think bmcecosse is a similar animal to my father in law and explains things perfectly. It certainly has happened on more than one occasion and we get adventures such as this.

I was a bought a piece of metal once because he found something made by Armstrong's of Beverley all the way over here at another one of his haunts. I am originally from Beverley in Yorkshire and thought the next task would have been to find out who actually made the part and where he lived or if I knew them. Aussie's love things finding their way to these shores and being of a purpose.

Thanks so much for the links to the other website for pre-war moggies. We are blown away by the interest and kindness shown along with knowledge of course too.

The thing that is getting Col so interested is why the two ends are facing in opposite directions when usually and as shown by the help so far, the ends would either face the same way or run vertically at one end.

Col is worried that just because an Aussie labels a metal pipe a 1929 Moggy Manifold, it doesn't mean it is - he thinks it could just as well be off a huge diesel engine or a vintage home brew beer cooler for all we know but that might be stereotyping a little.

He wonders if Morris parts are distinctive because of this.

Thanks again for all the comments and links, we don't know what to say except "Good on ya".

At least it stops us discussing the cricket at the moment. Manifold hunting seems to be important all of a sudden. Can't think why!!

Ha Ha Ha - The secret to Rugby League over here is simple. State of Origin. It is immense. I reckon similar should exist for the Red and White Roses. I know they have tried it before but the passion of the Blues and the Maroons is infectious over here. This is certainly going off topic so all the best and thanks again.
