Smoke or steam from my exhaust

This will probably seem very trivial once the whole story is said but I just want to be sure... I was driving today in my '69 saloon and the weather was pretty awful, there was minor (no pun intended) flooding on all the roads. Anyway, as I was going along, a pothole appeared and took off the exhaust (where it joins before the silencer) ... I crept home slowly, let it cool and put it back (with ease) but now, when I start it, some smoke or steam is coming from my exhaust... I believe it's just water that's got into the exhaust but am worried it's not... any advice?
