Re: keep running
i think its called running on ,something to do with unburnt fuel in the cylinders not being burnt im sure bmc will tell us more about it ,my old engine used to do this .

Re: keep running
too rich, too high a tickover, or carbon in the combustion chamber glowing and acting as a spark plug.
Check the colour of the plugs.

Re: keep running
As above - something is glowing red - hot enough to ignite the mixture and keep it running. Too rich - or badly retarded ignition timing.

Re: keep running
And with the wonder that is the messageboard, a world of total harmony and agreement...
Ignition timing too far advanced. Air leak in manifold leading to a weak mixture.

Re: keep running
ok, well i showed you my spark plugs a couple of weeks back and they were a good colour so everyone said!. so i think maybe i need to advance the timing a bit more, ive not got it quite right since the garage fannied around with it and messed it right up, when it left the garage it was constantly back firing after they retarded the ignition too much.
ive not done points gap for a while? would this make a difference?
also fuel pump seems to be ticking more?
and the condenser is over a year old... last one only lasted a year!?Q

Re: keep running
AND....... i think it is tooo rich at tickover as it does run toooo fast no matter how much i reduce the idle setting.only way i can get it to tick over slower is to force the jet assembly doofa right back up by hand
Re: keep running
Running on is not caused by advanced ignition timing - that just leads to pinking and holes in the pistons.....
Retarded timing leads to running hot - and glowing 'bits' in the combustion chambers.

Re: keep running
If it ain't broke don't fix it... rub the points down to the nubs and the condensor will run for many more years.horrace wrote:and the points and condensor issues?
As others have said, the running on will be bad timing (or maybe you need a decoke?) as it happened to an engine I had which ran on for about 10 secs. Timing adjusted = running much smoother.
Re: keep running
yes thats what i will do. thanks. just wondered why it was doing it, since i have been driving the pick up for the last few weeks and its only just started doing it, maybe a buld up of carbon then due to unburnt fuel?
Re: keep running
And another thing to check is whether it's too hot. An overheated unit will run on.
