Can anybody give me the dimensions (width x height) of original black number plates ?

Yes Pascal 520mm x 111mm front and rear.Charecters to be 89mm high 64mm wide expect the No 1, spacing between charecters 13mm and spacing between groups 38mm. White/Silver on Black registration plates can not be used on vehicles registered after 1/1/1973 on UK roads. If the vehicle is registered after 1/1/1973 and is being re registered with an older plate then that registration plate must be Black on White front & Black on Yellow rear.

Thank you for this comprehensive answer. I've actually exported my moggy to France and over here they allow black plates for any vehicle over 30 years old.
