Longer / deeper grease nipples

Post by jagnut66 »

Hi,
I have just finished greasing my nipples and, as usual, found the hardest ones to get a fix on were the ones on my prop-shaft U/J's.
Firstly though I must point out that I have the 1275/type 9 prop-shaft fitted from the (excellent) kit supplied by the Morris Minor Centre Birmingham (or David Manners). There seems to be less space on these U/J's to get the nozzle of my grease gun in to attach it.
I was wondering if it were possible to get hold of so longer / deeper grease nipples and screw them in, in place of the (seemingly) short ones that came with it.
Alternatively is there an adapter for the grease gun that will allow it to fit onto nipples in tighter spaces? (I have a Draper trigger model with both fixed and flexible nozzles.)
If the answer is yes to any of the above, where do I get them from?
Many thanks in advance for any help / advice.
Best wishes,
Mike.

I'm sorry to say I'm not sure about longer grease nipples- the thing that did spring to mind though is that if they are available, fitting them could possibly upset the balance of the prop (assuming it's nicely balanced at the moment!). Good luck on your hunt. Agricultural suppliers would probably be a good place to check for that sort of thing.

My prop has longer ones, in fact I thought being where they are, all minors had them as standard!

I recently replaced the U/Js on my Minor I bought the bearing kits from the Bristol Morris Minor Centre and they came supplied with grease nipples which were approx 3/4 long I do not know if they can be supplied separately but its worth a phone call to them

Hi,

Try a local bearing supplier, obviously you would have to take the one you want to replace with you to get the correct size. Failing that you could try a engineers bolt and nut supply merchant. This is the type of place, http://www.bbnonline.co.uk/online/index2.aspx
For odd bits like that you will be suprised what you can buy locally.

Do you know the thread size? If it is 1/4", there are some long grease nipples on eBay (pack of 5):

Thanks for this, should of thought of eBay myself!
I now have them in my watch list until I can check the size. If not the search will go on......
Regarding an earlier comment, I wouldn't of though that a change of grease nipples would throw the balance out, would it??
Regards,
Mike.

Re the balance- I just wondered as the further something 'sticks out' from the prop, the more of an effect any slight difference in weight will have due to the higher speed it will be rotating at. I've no idea how finely balanced the props are tbh, but just thought it could be worth bearing in mind. For the price of a few grease nipples, it's worth giving it a go and just worrying about it if it does cause an imbalance! Good luck.

Are straights fitted, Would right angle/elbow nipples be any easier to get to?

An alternative idea- get a flexible delivery tube for your grease gun! I swapped the fixed end on my Sealy gun for a flexible one and would not go back, greasing is easier and no nipple too hard to reach!

Hi,
I already have a flexible tube, however the nozzle size is the same on both.
The problem is that the grease nipples on the new prop-shaft seem to be shorter than the standard moggie ones and the U/J's themselves appear to be smaller, all of which means that there is less space to squeeze the nozzle in to attach it to the nipple.
(Which also means it will be fun trying to remove / replace them................. :( )

Mike.

I have now fitted these longer grease nipples to my propshaft, as I had to remove it, so I could remove the engine and gearbox to renew the clutch.
They weren't a straight swap, as I had to get my tap and die set out to re-cut the thread for the replacement longer nipples to get them to screw in but they make greasing the universal joints on the prop a doddle, unlike the painfully short originals which always left me wondering if I'd actually managed to get any grease in there.......

Drives fine too, not feeling any vibration / imbalance.
