Hi Roy All i can say that it looked a bit old.lost the spark After doing the usual with points changeing the Condenser etc.
I put a new coil on . Know more problems.

To what extent are coils interchangable? I.e. can I put an 803 coil on a 1275, or at an autojumble buy a random coil from another car, say Hillman 1725, and put it on an A series and it works satisfactorily?

Surely there must be something to do with the output and not just whether it runs on 6v or 12v.

Explanation would be much appreciated. :-?

There are 2 main types of 12V coils, the ones that run on 12 volts and the "ballast" type that utilize a ballast resister in series w/the coil, so the coil is actually only running on 8 or 10 volts. :) :)

Or 6 volts in the case of my TR7....... And yes - using a low volts coil will give great sparks.......for a short while...... and then it 'WILL' be the coil !! Unless of course the points burn out first carrying a far higher current than they are rated........
