Re: sorn
Yes - but it then takes several days to arrive..... and if you NEED the disc. remember it is an offence to have the vehicle on the highway not displaying a current disc. In any case - we should all support our local POs - use them or lose them!

I agree BMC, we do need to support local establishments, sadly too many are disappearing. By the way thanks folks you've reminded me I need to sort out our van tax before end of the month!bmcecosse wrote: In any case - we should all support our local POs - use them or lose them!

What was said here is technically wrong. You can drive a vehicle on the road while not showing or showing an expired tax disc so long as the vehicle has been taxed on line and are allowed up to five days grace.
Re: sorn
NOT true! It's an entirely separate ofence to not be DISPLAYING a current disc. You 'may' get away with it if the old disc was valid to the end of the month just ended......but a Traffic Warden etc would be only too keen to issue a fixed penalty notice. The old 'tax disc applied for' notice in the screen doesn't wash any more.....if it ever did. You may have a few days 'grace' to renew the Tax -but NOT to display a current tax disc on the vehicle.

Re: sorn
I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?
When you apply for a tax disc online or by using DVLA's phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives. Above taken from dvla site. So a sorn retax will not apply since you don't have a current disc and you must have applied before the old one expires if not on sorn. So it depends if you are desperate to use the car, simple to just decide when you want the car back on the road and apply a week before. every time I have used the net the disc has been with me in about three days. My nearest po is about 10 miles away and no parking within 10 minutes walk ,pay and display costs £1.50. ,there is usually a queue out of the door at the po,and certainly would be longer than I was alowed,Probably longer in the inner cities.5 mins at the most on the net.....no competition for me.

Re: sorn
As I described then -only ok if retaxing. But I suggest still liable to get a ticket from a parking warden. And all the hassle that would imply to get it cancelled....perhaps. My PO is less than 3 minutes brisk walk - and generally only a couple of old codgers (like myself........) collecting their pensions.......

If you apply on line or by phone to the DVLA you CAN USE a vehicle on the road LEGALY for up to five days after the expiery of the old tax disc or sorn. Quoted from Display of vehicle excise regulations road traffic act ' The five day exemption only applies if an application has been made prior to the current excise disc or sorn expiry date.'
Yes the failure to display a tax disc is an offence but not under the ruling above.
Parking Enforcement or Civil Enforcement Officers, cannot issue tickets relating to display of tax. because they are employed by by local council on a civil basis and have no powers of law. However if there any Traffic Wardens left in the country they are employed by the local Police aurthority and under the remit of powers from the Police they are allowed to enforce some road traffic laws.

Yeah, V5, Insurance + mot certificate.bmcecosse wrote:No need for a form - they do it 'on line' for you. And give you the disc right away! Just take the V5c along with you - although I'm not sure you actually need that.
Prob. don't need forms nowadays, have 'on-line' facility!
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Re: sorn
yes, that happened to me last year when I "un-sorned". The tax was backdated to the begining of the month so I could use it straightaway.
