HIF44 on a 1098, wrong, right, or indifferent

Post by super trimbo »

Hi All,

Just after some opinions here and to check i've not done a no no.

The HIF38 carb i had on my 1098 was knackered, so whilst i'm building up motovation to refurb it, i found a hif44 in the shed, fitted it, and it seems to run lovely - and is giving me around 60 miles to 10 quids worth of fuel which doesn't seem terrible.

The only reason i'm questioning myself is due to a quick chat with the guys @ moss europe re an air filter for it - He was adamant that I should change the carb as it will overfuell ?

So should I get my backside in gear and rebuild the 38 or just be happy with the 44? will it cause any damage if I leave it?

Cheers

hahahahahahahahahahahaha - hohohohohohohoohohohohoh.......gaaaaaaassspspsppppppp.
Oh dear - all this crap about 'over fueling' - I hear it all the time on the Mini forum. Yes - the carb is slightly on the large size for your engine - but why on earth would it 'over fuel' (whatever that means)..... It's going well - and 60 miles for £10 doesn't sound too bad to me. (Well - it does really...... but not a lot we can do about the cost of fuel. these days.) Have a look at the plugs to check the colour. But no harm at all using that carb - this is the beauty of the SU design - the choke area adjusts automatically depending on the air flow demand from the engine. I dare say your carb piston probably never opens right up - but no matter! It's running well. What more could you ask!!!!

Thanks for that BMC, best get an air filter on it as running without one is probably not the best idea!

A pair of 38s might be over doing it a bit :) . The only problem with too large a carb is that it may not lift the piston fully on max acceleration and therefore not be working at max efficiency, but under normal conditions you should be ok. A knackered 38 versus a good 44, I know which I would fit
