Fitting heaters on '52 beasts

Hi

I hear there are two methods of fitting heaters on 1952 models.

I am getting mind boggled at differing opinions as to which is the most effective way of doing it and how much it should cost.

Gold coloured heater [matches dashboard] is being supplied.
Need to find a rheostat tho'.

There is currently no water pump, just the plate.

I've been told one method is to fit a water pump and with the other method you don't.

Has anyone and experience of both techniques please?

hi squiggle
i think that a pump will need to be fitted to your side valve.
i am sure the thermo sypthon effect will work but it will take a while to warm the inside of the morris. another problem may be an air lock to the heater. it sits much higher then the water level in the engine so water will not naturaly run up to the heater. you can try filling with pouring water directly into the heater pipe, and connecting, but yuo still may get an air lock. w pump is the way to go, lots of hot water to the heater.
the missing switch, you could just fit an on/off type un till you find the reostat type.

the thermosyphton effect on the side valve is amazing. on the hottest of days in the maddest of londons traffic, and the engine still does not miss a beat, or stress the fuel pump with that dreaded cutting out. wonderful.

I think what Chrissie was getting at is that you can either fit a water pump to the engine or have a separate one driven via a belt. You are of course totally correct about the heater not getting any water 'up-hill' so if you need a heater then you need a pump!!

And the thermosyphon is amazing that it works so well!! I think all Morris cars used this method until about 1950 so it seems to work!!! :lol:

It would be interesting to see which engine is fitted into Chrissie's car as the waterpump sidevalves were fitted from about 1950 to 1953, so her 1952 should have a waterpump already fitted, unless it has had a replacment (earlier) engine at some point.

what??? isnt one fitted to the engine the same as one driven by the fan belt???

There are two types. One fitted to the engine (bolted to the block) and a separate one. The separate ones were used to install a heater before the waterpump model came out (pre '50). It sits on the left hand side of the engine bolted to the tie plate (engine bay floor) and runs from a pulley driven from the engine via a vee belt. The ones I have seen were made by Smiths.

The water pump model has a water pump in the normal place driven in the usual way via the fanbelt and so does not need an external pump.

The ones I have seen were made by Smiths.

i bet there difficult to find?

Yeah, they ARE difficult to find. I have only seen a few on my travels.

Well, I'm sorry to hear about the 'crunch' Chrissie, but I'm not surprised about them not leaving a note. Happened to me a fair few times when parking in patrolled CCTV camera'd university car parks. When I went to get a look at the CCTV tape it was either not working, no tape in or the camera was not pointing in that direction!!

I guess some folks are just bad drivers and not very nice :( :cry:

I do hope it was the old wing and not one of the new ones...........

HUT was booked in for both wings to be replaced next week!

So, if this had happened a few weeks time I'd be well :cry:

I assume your damage was for one of the wings you were going to have done.

Luckily [?] it is. Maybe I should go and park the other way round and get them to wound that side as well.

Not funny really. Some people are thoughtless.

Will think more about where I park in future even if it means walking!
