Clutch problems!

Its definitely not loose, but isnt constantly stretched.. Its pretty strong as well, but I havent seen a throttle return spring so not a lot to compare it to! Ill order another one from a different shop as their only a couple of pound and see how that one is!

Your car should have a throttle return spring....just look under the carb!

Thanks, and I would love to finally come and meet some other members, but I have to work that weekend It seems uni and work always coincide with these things!!
Thanks for all your advice anyway, Ive got another spring in the post so hopefully should be able to have a proper clutch again soon haha!

Yes - "fork" and "clutch". By the way is there any way of replacing the clutch relay shaft with gearbox in situ or if I loosen gearbox crossmember bolts ( for example) is there enough clearance.....................................yes just done it,undo the clip on the gearbox side and there's enough room to slide the shaft into the chassis side then remove sideways,to refit slide chassis end in and refit gear box side. Its designed to be able to do it ,the spring holds everything in place,absolutly no need to loosen anything else.

Well done BMC you were spot on , Another spring just arrived and I had been sent the wrong spring! Although it doesn't look much like my throttle return spring either so who knows... Anyway, swapped them over and the clutch is fixed within 5 minutes! Thanks!

As to putting on a spring, I find that tying a bit of string to the front hook of the spring works well, all you need to do is pull it and guide the hook into the hole on the backplate. No swearing required either! But, I think you probably have got a wrong spring in any case. There is not way it would be slack in resting position. It should always be under tension.
