Gearlever noise

the 1098 box on 'the car with no name' runs very sweetly and the gearchange is good. the only annoyance is that the lever rattles in gear. Rest your hand on the lever and it stops.
Any suggestions how to prevent this?

o-ring on the bottom end of the lever is probably worn missing or damaged

If I remember correctly there is a little spring loaded pin that is in the side of the gearbox where the gearlever fits which I think is an anti rattle pin and it often goes missing if the gearlever has been taken out as its quite small I think they are numbers 37 &38, in the Gearbox selector section on Charles Wares site.

Peetee, you know I should have shown you Hebe's lever... it does that a little. - did you check the gearbox oil level??? I know my oil box problems solved a bit when I cleaned the gearbox oil out...

Petee is a while since I have taken one apart and then it was causing a lot of gearlever rattle and I found it was missing but I cant remember if it would stop your movement or not, where is the gearbox expert...

I did this in the summer! There is an o-ring on the bottom of the stick, a plunger which goes underneath and pushes up and there is a spring loaded pin which pushes in from the side. It took me about 20 minutes to put new ones of each in (there wern't any there already

) the o ring wasn't a ring anymore either, it rattled from 40mph in top!

theres a small spring with a brass sleve, (plundger) which contacts the gearstick from the lefthand side of the hole where the stick fits. yours is probably missing, look for a 1/4 inch dia hole in the gerbox casing.
the rattle gets worse the faster you go

I was once told that this spring oftens falls out if a gearbox is upended (i.e. rested on the bellhousing end). Anyone else heard of this?

If you store gearboxes you are better off to leave the gearlever in as the plungers are prone to falling out, and it also stops bugs, dirt, rain etc from getting in the box.

On closer inspection (not easy as the car is covered by a tarpaulin because of leaky screens

) the rubber ring is worn down so it is flush with the metal. he hole it fits in is just that, it's a bit oily in there but it doesn't look like there is anything loose below it. The rattle is the gear lever hitting the cover plate above. I'm happy with the gearbox it'self. it only appears to be a problem with the gear lever mounting.

PEETEE, when you replace the top cover (3 bolts) which holds
the gear lever in position then you should find that you have to push
this cover down against the spring pressure where the bottom ball
on the gear lever contacts the bottom sprung loaded plunger. If this
does no apply in your box then the bottom spring and seat need
renewing. An obscure cause of rattle on my box was found to be
caused by the fact that the pattern rubber cover which fixes to the
gearbox tunnel with six screws was made of extremely stiff rubber
and transmitted the vibration to the car as the speed increased.
(it was touching the gear lever housing). When I fitted a new soft
rubber gaiter the noise disappeared.
