Increasing MM insurance costs

Post by southerly95 »

Am I alone with experiencing increasing Footman James MMOC car insurance price rises?

At the moment we have 3 Morris Minors (a saloon used regularly approx 3k a year, a convertible used for outings/events only and a Travellor on SORN as I redo the w/work). Renewal cost is £515 this time and all on one policy. Wife uses the saloon and we have 2 named driver daughters aged 23 and 25 who live away and rarely drive them now - but nice when they can.

My main car is an old Merc and I clock up 15k a year and insure it separately so NCD applies to that only. It looks like quite a few other members have more than one MM so how do you arrange insurance or do we all suffer? What other choices or insurance combinations are there?

Regards, John

PS I rang FJ and they said they could reduce it to £487 if we only did 1,500 a year, there is no way of backing out of the additional benefits either - recovery/legal etc.

I don't know what all the hipe is about FJ I have had a few quotes from them since being a member. Om my modern with full ncd I was quoted neary £800 so I stayed with the company I was with at a renewal of £308 inc ncd protection and drivers legal aid thingimy.
So needless to say I think they think they are like a motorway sevice area and members of MMOC are a captive customer, well I'm deffo NOT! I won't ever price from them again.

As a side note,
My Step Grandsons have been looking for insurance for their you know "boy racer cars" A Ford Focus and a Vauxhall Corsa. The youngest one 17 yrs old just passed his test in November 2011 has been quoted silly money best he could gat was about £3,000 with huge exess.
Unbeknown to me he decided to try and get a quote for Pop's van (1972 Minor LCV 1098cc) for his everyday use in his own name only as the only driver. Quote came back at £355 per year (exess £150 iirc)

If he thinks he's even gonna smile at it he's sadly mistaken!

I bought my Morris van last year and paid about £136 a year with FJ with unlimited mileage and it is kept outside and used three times a week for work I also have a Focus as an everyday car. This year it went up to about £159.FJ was the only company that would allow me to use it to go to work.I used to be with RH when I had an A35 van and was allowed to use it for work but would not insure the Morris van.

FJ through the club scheme has gone up 25% this year. I have 2 cars 1989 mini & 1969 minor. I contacted them to see if the premium could be reduced if I reduced the mileage as its currently unlimited, or remove the european travel. The person at FJ said no the policy is what it is!!

With regard to Footman James giving uncompetitive quotes for a "modern", it sounds rather like my son tapping "Austin 1100" into one of the compare websites, and wondering why they don't quote! Each have their own market.
I dislike Footman James hugely for their tacky Butler logo (and use of the B52's "love-shack"* as hold music in the past), but for my particular requirement, they are the most competitive (and I am not entitled to any club discounts if they actually exist!). At £102 unlimited mileage, with all the bits and bobs, which I have not yet used in the last 4 years, it beats anything else I can find. Others may give a better quote, but from my experience, as soon as you mention leaving the car in the driveway rather than locked hidden in a garage, others shie away! If anyone can advise me on a better price than FJ for my situation, unlimited mileage, kept outside, and.....gasp.......used as prime vehicle!!!, then I would be pleased to jump ship from the silver platter. As an aside, for the cynical amongst us, it is disappointing to see that Peter Best feels the need to introduce a similar cheesey character in his adverts recently!

* Nothing wrong with the B52's, but not exactly bland, calming hold music if you are getting a bit fed up with being kept on hold!

FJ has been excellent for me. 21 yo male, club member, unlimited mileage, 803 Minor = £233. Phoned them up other day to add another car to policy (1275cc engine) and wearing the good old 1970's Austin badge = £32 premium increase. As a result of this I cannot reccommend them highly enough, but then I suppose I have no option of going anywhere else.

Still damn cheap though for a 21 yo.

Btw linear, they have hold music more inkeeping with their image now: Vivaldi or Handel or someone.

I must say That FJ are great for the younger members. Most of the members of the Young Members Register are with them and pay a fraction of what our counterparts in Vauxhall Corsas and the like pay.

Special thanks has to go to Dave Youngs from FJ who does all he can to help members of the register!

Thank you Mr Coles for your kind words, we aim to please.

The Footman, or butler, is on the way out. We no longer use his image in any of our new adverts and have reduced the image to just the closh. That is also on it's way out and all the ads are going to be rebranded by the end of the year (hopefully) Have a look at the most recent Classic Car Weekly for the new design

The B52's haven't been the 'on-hold' music for some time, we tend to drive people mad with Vivaldi's 'The Four seasons' these days!

There's exciting things happening at FJ at the moment. Can't reveal at the moment but let's just say that new underwriters and new products are going to be added during Q3 :)

As Matt has said, i'm fairly active over on the young members facebook group but my help isn't restricted to just the young 'uns. I'm quite happy to receive PM's through here and Liz at the club office will pass on any feedback to me directly
