Crazy idle

So today we finally got the car running. Wahooo

But after such a long time in the making the car ran very very badly on idle

The car would rev very high then drop really low and does this repeatedly

Can anyone tell me the reason for this? Do I need to wind in the adjuster nut under the carb up a long way to make it a leaner mixture?

Any help would be appreciated.

Could be many things.....but well done getting it running. So - is there a good throttle return spring fitted? Is the 'choke' working correctly - going off completely? Are there any air leaks - engine can't run unless it gets air - and that should be controlled by the throttle. No throttle = no revving up!

Is there any oil in the carb dashpot?
