broken speedo
my speedo was not counting miles, so i got a new one from someone.
however, after fitting i quickly became apparent that it was reading the wrong speed, (about double) and the miles were flying.
I think the new one could be a newer model and have a different gearing to it, my old one had a cream backgroud, the new one is black.
can it be fixed or is another new one in order?

speedo
The black faced speedos are from the later 1098 cars, if you give
us the model, year, and engine size of your car we can tell you which speedo to look for (there are identifying numbers on the face).

Hi!
If your speedo is working but not counting miles you may just need to dismantle it at put it back together again. (I suspect either the odometer has jammed or the mechanism for rolling on the miles has gone)
Either way, if you've got another speedo as a donor you should be able to replace these bits without any problem (I think) hebe had some problems with her Speedo sticking and generally not being very good (reporting really high speeds suddendly and then sticking at 70 when we came to a stop!)
Taking your speedo apart is quite scary, but provided you're careful and take your time, you should be able to fix it.
I took mine apart a few months back to replace the standard 1098 centre dail with the km/hr dial from the Mini speedo I'd been sold (I was told it was a minor speedo but the thing was so out when putting it in the car it was obvious the gearing was different and it was from a mini)
Anyway - don't dispair!

I agree with Nikki, that it is often possible to fix. I had one like that and just had to bend the moving arm slightly so it touched the toothed wheel and hey presto - a working odometer! The car had previously not counted miles for about 2 years as I got the old MOT's from the previous owner and the last few showed the same mileagemy speedo was not counting miles

hi!
I found a really good guide on line a few weeks back...
Let me have a root for it!
*roots around and doesn't find it*
I basically took my time, and gently removed everything
Don't let any part "hang" at any point and you should be okay. (The drag cup can be damadged if you pull at it or let it hang)
But other than that, it's quite simple...
I'll carry on rooting

Yes...Kevin wrote:And the front chrome ring, did that come of and go on back easily

Mine was slightly out of shape, but with a bit of work it came off and went back on just fine
