tappet clearance

Post by paul42mill »

Hi Guys.
Can anyone offer any advice on this one.
Set my tappet clearance to 0.12in as advised in the manual, my engine has become very noisey.
it was quiet before hand and i set them to see how it panned out.
It would seem it panned out not very well!!!

The problem with any site is you never know what level of Mechanic you are dealing with, so forgive me, there is no inference, but did you use the number 9 rule?
i.e. 1 rocker down set 8, 2 rocker down set 7 etc?
Also the whizz kids on here had me set my exhaust valves slightly wider at 15 thou, inlets at 12 thou, that you would surmise would make her noisier, but it worked nicely for me

I hope you mean 0.012 inches, not 0.12 inches!

What were they reading before you altered them, and did you turn the adjusting screw a fraction of a turn or several turns?

Did you slacken the locknuts then nip them up afterwards? And as moggythouable said, always use the "rule of 9". The 0.015 inches for exhaust valves is to ensure they never close up completely, and to give a longer period when they're about right. I've never bothered setting them wider, but I don't hammer my poor little A-series, or cover many miles.

Hi chaps.
Yes did set them as described in manual, as you have said.
The only prob i had with that is how do you tell that each valve is fully down??
I know that if you continue turning it will start to come back up again, so you can only guess where is about full open cant you??

Eyesight and feel.
The feelers should slide out with a little resistance.
I let the rocker just rise and send it down again.
Set them again keeping a careful eye on that bottomimg of the rocker, youll get there.

It's not important when they are 'fully down' - but 0.12" is far too big.... 12 thou inlets and 15 thou exhausts.... that's 0.012" inlets and 0.015" exhausts........
