Well - that's ok then! Does the piston rise and fall with a clunk, and is the 'choke' control definitely going right OFF. Look at the base of the carb while someone pulls/pushes the knob.

I'll have another look at the carb piston as I don't remember it falling with a clunk. That would therefore mean that I need to adjust something to make it fall further or quicker, or both?

I'll get back with an answer 8)

Very handy that the weather is cracking at the mo.!!!

So when the carb piston falls, it click, taps at the bottom. Definitely not silent .

Had a look also at the choke. It seems to be fully off and inside the carb, the 'golden' bit of the choke protrudes about 1mm above the bottom. If that makes sense.

Mentioned earlier was oil in the dash pot. By this do you mean the oil in the reservoir above, around the pin in the carb. How would I check the level of this? There is oil in there as the pin that pulls out the top is coated in a nice oily sheen. :D

The oily sheen sounds good, you can feel the damping action as you push the rod back in.

Yep, I would say that the problem is elsewhere and not the carb. But heh ho. I think it might get complicated. I'm learning all the time though!

All sounds fine - it's just running too rich. I don't get the 'golden' 1mm bit? When the 'choke' is pushed home the jet should rise right up to the jet nuts with no jet tube left showing........

I read brass for golden, which makes sense.

Yeh the the jet tube goes right up to the nuts on the underside. The 1mm was on the inside, about 1mm of jet protruding. I've got a picture I will get uploaded! 8)

So if running too rich what should I adjust? :D

That's odd - it should never really protrude there. I would check if the needle is correctly installed in the piston - shoulder flush with base of piston.

Ok so I have now adjusted the bottom nut, to make the 1mm disappear and this now sits flush!

Yes - but that's no use if the engine is running far too rich. Which is why I ask if the needle is too far up inside the piston...

The shoulder should be flush with the base.

There is a shoulder on the needle, it should end up level with the base of the piston.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the answers to what you probably think are silly questions! I'm lapping up the knowledge! Got to start somewhere .

I'll go and have a look after I've done the dishes!

Had a look and the pin shoulder is sitting level with the base on the piston.

So not too sure where to start looking now for this stutter when warm. Distribution cap next I suppose?
