What a pest!

Post by stag36587 »

So, with a tiny bit of fettling I have excellent panel gaps between front panel, bonnet, inner wings. I am very pleased and relieved!!

But....

Trial fitted the passenger door on Saturday - really great gaps all the way round except the curvature at rear of door is not matching curvature of rear quarter panel - the door bulges out more in the middle. Door is in excellent condition and damage free.

No doubt it's something to do with repair panel I had to put into rear quarter or the lower b-post to sill repair panel - I think I can adjust door hinges slightly and check the sill cover panel, otherwise I may need to do some more radical surgery- although all repair panels seemed a really good fit. :-/. I'll try and post a pic later but any ideas gratefully received. :-?

Is the kick plate fitted? Sometimes the new ones arent a great fit and sit too high pushing the door out. The last couple I have used had to be trimmed along the edge that sits on the floor to let it down a bit further.

.Has the door also been repaired with one of those door bottom panels, because from the photo it looks like the door is pointing out from the line of the bottom of the front wing and the bottom of the rear quarter.Take a straight edge and line it up from the front of the wing and the quarter panel along the sill edge and see if they line up.then you may see where its out.I take it the darker bit on the photo on the quarter panel is where the repair is.But the door looks out further up ,away from this repair.Shut the door and look inside and see if the inner door frame is up against the lip on the b post all the way down, you will also be able to see if the sill cover is fouling the bottom of the door. If the door edge looks right on the inside then no adjusting will get it to go further in because there's no where for it to go.I once accuired an abandoned project mgb with exactly this fault it had been repaired in the same place,I found that it was the repaired door which was the problem, rather than strip the old door repair off I cut a slot along the door bottom and so far up the rear edge and was able to pull the outer skin inwards enough to close the gap then seam welded up the cut.Its always advisable never to fully weld any panels untill doors and wings have been trial refitted just a tack here and there so that its easy to re jig for good fit.But then everythings easy with hindsight sat infront of a screen GOOD LUCK

Some great thoughts there , many thanks, I will check the kick panel - I had another quick look last night and it was definitely rubbing a little at the b post end. Certainly the interesting thing was that the problem seemed to be just as much where the original metal was between door and rear panel than the lower quarter repair panel. The door hasnt had a repair panel fitted.

here's picture from inside - so gap seems to indicate that adjusting hinges some more should help?[frame]Image[/frame]

well that gap on the inside would just about fix it,has it bound up at the front fitting edges.ie you may need to get the front of the door slightly further out from the frame to allow the rear to fit, seem to remember having to do this to mine once, moved the door front edge out and then fiddled with the wing to get everything lined up.I think I also tapped the front of the door flange in slightly just a mm or so.
