MOT and speedo

Post by bmcecosse »

Just found out that you now need to have a working speedo for the MOT. It must have a dial glass, must illuminate, and reason for fail if it is 'clearly inoperative'. ie if it doesn't show speed when the wheels are turning, it's 'clearly inoperative'..... Doesn't say anything about it being accurate though......

I can't see how they could test for accuracy.... I'm strugling to see how they are going to test it at all. Will the brake test rollers spin up to 30mph ?

I guess they just need to see it move when on the rollers - to check it is working. No mention of accuracy. That's a Construction & Use Regs legality.

allways wondered when they would get round to this, always used to be tested when the old test used the taply meter for brakes and the tester had to actually do something for his money ie drive the car on the road :DHow long ago is that now :-?

Mine was Mot'd yesterday and the tester drove it round his yard to visually check the speedo was working but like you say they are not interested in the accuracy of the speedo.

Has anyone gone for the test with the panel lamps switched 'OFF' and failed? Must be bound to happen sometime.

In all honesty it did take me a while when I first got the car to figure out why my speedo didn't light up.

I think my modern cars are all bound to fail. This new MOT requires a 'glass' dial front, and all my cars have plastic fronts to the speedo.....so I guess they are doomed to failure......
