recalibrate a speedo

the speedo in my van is showing 20mph while iam doing over 30mph, found out with one of those radar signs how can i get it recalibrated ? just bought a new cable from speedy cables for the ford gearbox to smiths morris speedo

You really need to send it to a specialist. They advertise in classic car magazines, or just search online. If the Ford box has been fitted, then the speedo would need reclibrating. Wheel size also makes a difference, have they changed? What about the diff? Anyway, find your specialist and supply them with whatever information they request.

What tpm does your speedo have now ? If say you have a speedo with 1508 tpm, then a 1000 tpm speedo would likely make it pretty much ok. If you just want the speed sorted - you may be able to simply pull the needle - and refit it round a bit..... I suspect that's all the fancy places do anyway...... The mileage will still be 'miles' out of course......

Speedy Cables of London (actually based in Swansea!) did an excellent job on my Minor speedo when I changed the g/box to a Toyota 5 speed.Give them a call.

the other option is to strip the paint of your speedo and go out with a sat nav and mark up the correct speed..there is a photo of one done by a member of this board.. but i have been unable to find it..it did look very good..

There are some 1000 tpm Mini speedos I believe. You will need to ask every seller on ebay what the tpm is of the speedo they are selling! They never list it in the blurb, mainly because they don't know what it is.......

Speedy Cables did on mine as well but it ended up costing £90 as new parts were fitted, not the £60 originally quoted.

When you put a 1098 engine, gearbox and diff into a MM or series II split screen with a 3" speedo head, what else can you do but get one recalibrated to match?

As far as I can see, (but I could have missed something) the alternatives are to botch one by moving the pointer, as suggested in other threads, but the ratio won't be correct across the full speed range as the TPI will be different to that of a later 1098 car, so it's not going to be very accurate at anything other than the speed you 'botch' it to, or just ignore it and break the law?

A definitive answer on this would be good for everyone looking at running a Minor, rather than some of the rather sarcastic comments we keep seeing in these forums on costs.

Members need to remember that others don't mind paying a premium to get things looking/working properly

Hahahaha - the comments are meant to be light hearted - don't take it all too seriously........ As far as I know, the speedo only needs to be 'accurate' at 30 mph - so moving the needle would suffice. Failing that - fit the larger speedo!

Unless I missed something, I don't think you actually said what engine/box/diff/speedo you had fitted

its a 1300 x-flow with escort box and axle. gold faced speedo with 1504 tpm , wheels are 165x70x13

So -as I suggested, a 1000 tpm should correct the reading well enough at 30 mph - and probably over the whole range of the speedo.
