Engine identity

Post by welshrat »

Hi, trying to establish what engine I have at the back of my garrage, guessing a 948 but there are no clues. Only thing I have is the engine number but this does not seem to match any of the info about numbers. The engine number is 8G162 R N35531 Could be BG162 R N35531.

Engine pre-fix 8G signifies an exhange unit. See here: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... ngine+code

You will find a huge clue if you look at the manifold side of the block and see if there are any numbers either cast into the block or on a rivetted metal tag.

Numbers cast into the block are 12A 497, does this mean anything to anyone?

It's definitely a 1098 head....if the block doesn't have 950 cast in the side - it's a 1098.

Looking at the larger pics I'd still go with 1098. Looks like a factory gold seal at some point in the past.....
