Hi Folks,
While wandering around in Jethro's engine room yesterday I noticed two unconnected sender units, one on the bottom of the radiator and one on the top of the engine block.
Both have a male spade type connector and I assume that they are temperature probes for oil and water.
What would be the procedure to connect these to a gauge in the cockpit as a visual display of oil and water temperature would be a very useful addition.

One will be the oil filter blocked wire, green with a tracer from memory, sheathed wire normally.
I'm guessing the other might be for the brake light switch, do the brake light work?

Bottom of the rad would be a useless place to measure temperature - it's possible I suppose that it is a switch to operate an electric fan? And sensor on block - you have me there - unless of course it is the 'blocked filter' pressure switch on the filter casing.......?

Brake light switch is fitted separately at the bottom of the engine bay beneath the rad.
The sender in rad looks to me that it has been fitted as a blanking for the heater hose. as has said the 948's didn't have a temp sender fitted. so that says 1 someone has taken the time to drill tap and fit a sender to the head, or 2 it's 1098 head.
Hi My 948 has the same sender as that in the head.So probably not a 1098 head.Unless mine has a 1098 head as well!
And i have a water temperture gauge in car. I think it would be a bit of a coincidence To have ecsactly the same Switch and position machine work as this one.Any ideas???

Interesting. There would be no point at all measuring the temp from the bottom of the rad, where the water would be cooler and would not give an accurate reading of what was actually going on.
Only thing I can think of is that a previous owner put a sender in the heater return as a quick and easy way to a gauge, then this was left obsolete when the engine was changed and/or drilled for the sender in the head.
Let us know what readings you get from both of them!
It is either a 1098 head or off a Mini which I think all had the temp sender casting except the very early ones. As already stated, Minor 948 heads NEVER had the take off casting for a temp sender.... Whip off the rocker cover and check the number cast in the head:

Thanks Will check my head number.VERY intrested in finding out what head is on my 948. Begs the question is my engine a 948 Minor Engine. Will also check that too.

Yes - 948 heads NEVER had the sender unit - so these engines must have replacement heads - probably from a Mini. The 998 Mini 'unleaded' heads are available very cheaply (maybe even free) and I suspect some places harvest these, give them a lick of paint, and then sell them on as unleaded heads for Minors at great profit!! Interesting to see them listed as having larger chamber capacity - is that true? Never seen that before - if true, it means they give an even lower compression ratio.....perhaps the main clue to them being 'suitable' for 'unleaded' use........The sender in the base of that rad would be useless for a gauge - but may be (as I have already said) to operate an electric fan....otherwise it's just a plug in the hole normally occupied by a drain tap.

Hi Iv Checked the number on my head and is 1410R and has the letter B and the number 4 stamped on it
Can anyone cross reference this?? Would be quite chuffed if its unleaded.
My Engine number is 2M-U-H 3708401 Hopefully A 948???

Look again.... There are various numbers cast into the head so you need to find the correct one and "2M" is not correct either, I am guessing "9M" which would be a 948 engine....
