anyone had any trouble with new points. fitted a new set and dont seem to be able to get a big enough gap even filed the screw hole but still a very tight 12

Yes. I had two sets that would not adjust correctly, and also tried enlarging the hole. When laid beside a good set, the difference was obvious. Unfortunately, I have no idea from where the bad ones originated. :evil:

I buy that point set from my country ( Sri Lanka ) Long time ago - Work best to MM1000 - and very easy to remove point ,cleaning ,and set point gaping - not tight that as you say - I remember the point set made in England and the point set pack in a small cardboard box that have some blue lines - and it has printed form large letters " FORD "

Those are what points used to look like before the one piece plastic heal type which wear rapidly.
With the older type you have to make sure that the insulators are in the correct place
