Chug chug... scarry at 60!

Post by JaneHibbert »

Zooming along at 60 I hit a hill this evening, well a gentle slope on the mororway... and the morris began to slow all the way down to 25, I had to go into third and try and keep it going, it then started chugging, feeling for a moment like the engine had seized, then kangaroo forward, a few times... then hit the top of the slope and over 40 mph and all fine again! When I got to my destination checked what I could and all seemed well. On the way home it did it once briefly, then 45 miles at 60 with no issues.

What might it have been? I really did suspect is was going to seize or something!

Probably it's the coil......... NO !! Just kiddding... Assuming it wasn't running out of petrol, it may well have been carb icing! I believe you have been having cold/wet weather.. (sunny up here!) - which is ideal for forming ice at the venturi in the carb. The intake pipe should be aimed close to the exhaust manifold to try to capture warm air there - although it's a fond hope. Later Minis etc had a sheet metal 'stove' formed over the manifold - to more effectively capture the heat.

Try changing the condensor in the distributor, they can often start to break down when the engine is working hard

Last time I had that it was in Belgium. My car (not a Minor) played up and misfired so bad we went to come home early but it stopped when we refilled with fuel in France. It never happened again and I assumed it was water in the fuel or dodgey fuel from when we topped up in Belgium.
