picture of clutch return spring
Anyone got a picture of one fItted,my clutch is very heavy and when braking and using the clutch to gear down at the same time, the clutch pedal is not returning, leading the car to cut out at low speed. I have wound OFF the adjuster rod ( untightend the nut) then tightend the locking nut back. This seems to have made the clutch lighter but I havn't run the car yet so I don't know if the clutch pedal is rreturning yet. I looked at the spring shown on BM,but its a bit hard to tell if mines the same or not.

Look at how thick the wire it's wound from is, a tad thicker than throttle return spring is about right.
The closer to valve spring thickness, the more work your leg needs to do and the more wear on the linkage.

Sounds like your pedal is seized on the shaft - apply oil - lots of it! Quick test - take the return spring off and try the clutch. Is it any different? You can't run the car like that - but it's ok for a trial! The spring is just there to pull the carbon away from the pressure plate.

Cheers for the advice BMC,I'll try removing the return spring tomorrow. Thanks for the comparison size MarkyB,at least it'll give me a start point. I think tinkering is in order, rather than anything major, the adjustments I made have lightened the clutch action too much,so I'll wind it back on a few turns anyway tomorrow as well. That adjustment hasn't helped the clutch pedal return when I use the brake and clutch at the same time, but if I release even a bit of pressure on the Brake pedal the clutch pedal returns straight away,so some improvement already

So it is a 'shaft sticking' problem - oil and more oil required urgently...
